The FDA has just authorized the Osseoanchored Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees (OPRA)! More commonly known as osseointegration, it offers an alternative to traditional socket prostheses by anchoring the prosthesis to the patient’s bone through a permanently-implanted rod in the residual limb. Osseointegration offers a solution for above-knee amputees who are unable to wear a socket prosthesis or have trouble wearing one!

A Step Ahead has been on the forefront of getting osseointegration approved in the US since Erik Schaffer, C.P. traveled to Sweden in 2008 to meet with osseointegration pioneer Dr. Rickard Brånemark and saw its tremendous potential. We look forward to having yet another tool in our arsenal for helping amputees live life without limitations!
